This isn't a completely new discovery; I was just reminded of it today. Five minutes. . . usually gone in a blink of the eye, right? Hardly enough time to do anything with. Kind of like a dollar these days. But that's getting a little off track.
When I first realized how long five minutes really was, someone (no names here) asked me to be quiet for five minutes. Completely quiet, not saying a word. Now I come from a long line of talkers on both sides of the family, so this was not as easy as it might seem or even be for some others. I was able to do it, however, much to the surprise of the one who asked me, and I can honestly say that it was the longest five minutes of my entire life. Or at least that I can think of right now.
I was reminded of this little fact today when I had to give a five minute speech. Just a short, little speech that's only five teensy minutes long, a breeze. Well, it felt like I was up there forever. I didn't actually know how I was doing on time, just guessing, but it had to have been five minutes. It felt like it anyway, and I was definitely ready for it to be over. Turns out it was only three and a half minutes long. Guess I need to work on my time estimation skills a bit.
So what did I learn (besides the fact that I can't tell the difference between five minutes and three and a half)? That Andy really might have had enough time to set up all his toys and rip Woody's arm in the five minutes his mom gave him. I always thought that was one of those unrealistic movie things, but it just might be possible.
Because five minutes is really a lot longer than we tend to think.
