Short for Samantha, long for Sa.
Yeah, it's a little late. But I sorta forgot that you readers didn't know her name yet. She is named after the German Shepherd in I Am Legend. Caleb was trying to think of cool German Shepherds that he could name his after, and the Sam in the movie was a great dog.
Unfortunately, our Sam got into a little bit of an accident with a truck. Her back legs managed to get under the tire while the truck was moving, crushing her right leg badly. Caleb rushed her to the vet where they ended up having to amputate her leg and stitch up the other one. It was a pretty intense time for all of us, but especially Caleb who was heartbroken over his "baby". However, God saw fit to take us all through a trial last week, and He was glorified through it. Sam is doing very well; the vet calls her his miracle dog. She will get her stitches out in a little over a week, and hopefully everything will heal properly, her fur will grow back, and she will never know she was supposed to have four legs. :)
